Esalen® massage is a holistic bodywork approach developed at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, known for its long, flowing strokes, gentle rocking and an emphasis on integrating our body, mind and spirit.

A core principle of the practice for practitioners is grounding our selves to foster presence, which in turn helps our clients achieve deep relaxation and body awareness.

Esalen® massage Principles and Techniques

Esalen® massage is often described as a "moving meditation" due to the practitioner's focus on maintaining a mindful, heart-centered presence throughout the session.

Key aspects include:

  • Long, flowing strokes: These signature strokes connect the different parts of our body, creating a sense of wholeness and continuity.

  • Presence and awareness: As practitioners we begin by grounding our selves in a calm, centered state. Then we listen with our hands and intuition to the needs of our client and their body.

  • Integration: The focus is on the recipient as a whole person, not just on isolated problem areas. Deeper work, like deep tissue sculpting or acupressure, is integrated back into the whole body with flowing strokes.

  • Gentle movement: Techniques such as gentle rocking, stretching, and passive joint mobilization help release physical and emotional tension and increase range of motion.

  • Pauses: Moments of stillness are intentionally incorporated to allow our client to integrate the sensations and shifts within their body. This helps restore energetic balance and well-being.

Connection to Grounding

Grounding is a foundational element in Esalen massage, directly contributing to its therapeutic effects.

Practitioner's Role

As practitioners we are trained to ground our selves before and during a session to maintain a calm, centered and fully present state.

Many of our positions during the massage - some akin to yoga warrior poses - help to accentuate this sense of deep anchoring. Rather than using muscular pressure, we let gravity help us with deeper massage moves.

This facilitates a sense of ease and stability, which in turn creates a safe and accepting environment for our client, allowing the client's nervous system to shift into a parasympathetic (rest and digest) state.

Client's Experience

The slow pace, sustained touch and focus on sensory awareness help our clients redirect attention away from anxious thoughts and worries and back into their body and the present moment.

All of this helps to enhance whole body awareness while also facilitating release on a muscular and sometimes an emotional level, ultimately helping our client feel more stable, balanced and "at home" in their own body.

Holistic well-being

This gentle and flowing massage practice addresses all of who we are - physical, mental and emotional - allowing for a transformative experience that promotes inner growth and a deeper connection to our self.

In essence, it becomes a meditation in motion welcoming and grounding us home in our bodies...
