Jin Shin for Stress-Reduction

9/3/2024

Overwhelm is caused 99.9% of the time from the pressure and expectation we put on ourselves, often habitually without even realising, we just get so good at it. ~ Sarie Taylor
In today's fast-paced world, stress and overwhelm have become common companions for many of us. What we expect of ourselves may actually be untenable. The goal posts we set may be socially-conditioned ideals, rather than what our bodies and beings long for.

As a result our mental and physical health risks increase and our quality of life plummets. Concerns about the future often throw us  yet further out of kilter, adding to anxiety and stress-related conditions depleting our immune system.

This is where Jin Shin offers one valuable resource, as research studies increasingly show, to recover our health and well-being - other than a preventative measure in and of itself.

Jin Shin as a wellness practice

Jin Shin (or Jin Shin Jyutsu), is an ancient art of harmonizing the life force energy in our body.

It is all about aligning with our innate resilience and strengthening our overall sense of well-being. It is about coming into sync with the larger pulsation of life manifesting in the cycles of the seasons, tides, days, moon phases, breath and so much more.

As such, Jin Shin offers a simple and powerful key to balance, as it can enhance our physical health and provide deep emotional benefits.

Common conditions treated by Jin Shin

Jin Shin focuses on amplifying our ability to relax. It provides support with conditions triggered or exacerbated by stress, worry and anxiety. It can help to relieve chronic pain, digestive issues, fatigue and general stress-related disorders.

Jin Shin is also used in dealing with the challenging side effects of treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation and other drugs. Some cancer clinics offer Jin Shin Jyutsu as a complementary treatment to ease the discomfort of their clients.

Increasing research also shows that Jin Shin's focus on relaxation can directly impact stress-reduction.

Clinical evidence supporting Jin Shin

A recent study, published in the Journal of Holistic Nursing, found that participants who practised Jin Shin self-help techniques for 20-minutes per day reported statistically significant reductions in their emotional, organisational and physical stress levels.

Like many holistic practices, Jin Shin is also used alongside Western medicine to support a variety of treatments, with another study noting a significant drop in both pain and stress among patients suffering from a range of conditions including backache, headaches, fatigue, fibromyalgia or while undergoing cancer treatments.

Benefits of Jin Shin

During a session, the most immediate benefits are generally profound feelings of calm and relaxation. While results may vary from person to person, sessions carve out a space where triggers and worries can be set aside.

They also help our body maximise its innate capacity for healing: easing symptoms of anxiety and depression, and helping to rebalance emotional overwhelm.

The self-care aspect of Jin Shin is one of its greatest blessings. It offers a resource that can be  applied anytime, anywhere. While basic instruction from a practitioner or written guidelines are needed at the outset, the simplicity of its holds make it widely and freely accessible.

From efforting to ease

At times this simplicity can be easy to dismiss as too good to be true, especially as it calls for a deeper paradigm shift from efforting to ease.

Rather than exerting ourselves according to a no pain, no gain premise, Jin Shin invites us to sit (or lie) back leisurely, while gently supporting the intelligence of life inherent in our bodies to run its course.

DIY empowerment

As research increasingly shows, the application of Jin Shin to promote balance and harmony offers a valuable avenue for stress management and overall wellness.

Its non-invasive nature and self-help techniques make it not only accessible and versatile, but also self-empowering, offering one way to enhance our quality of life - whether we are dealing with daily stress or long-term issues.
